Crush is a site-specific sculpture cast directly on the floor of the old university library. The piece appears as if it has been thrown into the room, surrounded by plaster dust and broken materials that testify to an intense and physical creative process. The plaster evokes the tradition of classical sculpture, while the green tone, rebar, fibre glass mesh and plastic strips point towards industrial building materials and temporary structures.
Christiansen’s sculpture acts as a counterpoint to the orderly shelves of the library. The surfaces of the sculpture are pierced by an iron bar that stretches it open – a double movement of creation and destruction. Crush continues the artist’s exploration of plaster as a material and medium for casting. As is the case in several of his previous works, the sculpture contains traces of a life lived on the marginsof society – here manifested in used wigs from the Copenhagen drag scene.
Christiansen’s sculptures testify to the absence and presence of the body – they suggest that even the most solid can be fragile and that the marginal can possess monumental traces.
